Vernier caliper calibration for mining

Mine site workshops measure wear on liners, pins and bushes with calipers, and those measurements decide when components are changed out. A calibrated caliper keeps wear-monitoring records consistent from one shutdown to the next.

Calipers are the most-used dimensional instrument in any Perth workshop and the one most likely to have been dropped, over-tightened or used as a scribe. AmpTech calibrates vernier, dial and digital calipers in our Caversham lab against traceable gauge blocks, checking external, internal and depth measurement at points across the range.

Interval in mining

12 months

Manufacturer default; wear-monitoring records

Setting the interval

Twelve months is the standard workshop interval. Calipers used for final inspection or on tight-tolerance work are often placed on 6 months, with a quick gauge-block check between calibrations.

What the calibration covers

  • External measurement against gauge blocks at points across the range, including zero and full span
  • Internal (inside jaw) measurement against a gauge block stack
  • Depth rod measurement against a known step
  • Jaw parallelism and closure — light gaps at the tips show up as errors on small parts
  • Beam straightness and slide condition, and the zero setting on digital models

What your certificate records

The certificate format mining procurement and audit teams ask for: the equipment under test, its serial number, the reference instruments used, as-found and as-left readings, environmental conditions and a traceability statement, plus the vernier caliper-specific items below.

  • As-found and as-left readings at each length checked, for external, internal and depth
  • Jaw condition and parallelism observations
  • Gauge blocks and reference standards used, with their traceability
  • Environmental conditions at the time of calibration

Standards & frameworks in mining

  • ISO 9001 quality management system
  • AS/NZS 3760 for portable electrical equipment on site
  • WHS (Mines) Regulations 2022 (Western Australia)
  • Operator-specific prequalification requirements

How mining clients get vernier and digital calipers to us

Calibration is performed in our Caversham lab — not on site. We collect from and deliver back to mining workshops and offices across Perth, and instruments from regional sites come by freight or via your Perth base.

  • Mining head offices in Perth CBD and West Perth
  • Welshpool / Kewdale freight and equipment hubs supporting Pilbara operations
  • Malaga and Bayswater workshops fitting out mine vehicles and tooling
  • FIFO bases at Perth Airport — fast-turn calibration before flights out

Working with mining procurement

We work with mining procurement teams on POs, prequalification packs and instrument-by-instrument quotes. Every calibration ships with a clear certificate showing as-found / as-left readings and a traceability statement — exactly what auditors and PMC reviews ask to see.

FAQ

Vernier caliper calibration for mining FAQs

Our calipers are used in dusty workshops — anything to watch for?
Dust in the slide and on the measuring faces is the main issue. Keep them wiped down and cased, and expect the as-found readings on the certificate to tell you whether the environment is shortening their useful interval.
What does a caliper calibration certificate actually show?
The reading of the caliper against gauge blocks of known size at several points across the range, on external, internal and depth functions, both before and after any adjustment — plus a note on jaw condition.
My digital caliper reads zero when closed — does it still need calibration?
Yes. Zero tells you nothing about the reading at 100 mm or about worn jaw tips. Calibration checks the whole range against gauge blocks.
