Vernier caliper calibration in Perth

Vernier, dial and digital calipers checked against traceable gauge blocks on external, internal and depth functions across their full range.

Calipers are the most-used dimensional instrument in any Perth workshop and the one most likely to have been dropped, over-tightened or used as a scribe. AmpTech calibrates vernier, dial and digital calipers in our Caversham lab against traceable gauge blocks, checking external, internal and depth measurement at points across the range.

Types of vernier and digital calipers we calibrate

  • Vernier calipers (0–150 mm to 0–1000 mm)
  • Dial calipers
  • Digital calipers
  • Long-jaw and offset calipers

What the calibration covers

  • External measurement against gauge blocks at points across the range, including zero and full span
  • Internal (inside jaw) measurement against a gauge block stack
  • Depth rod measurement against a known step
  • Jaw parallelism and closure — light gaps at the tips show up as errors on small parts
  • Beam straightness and slide condition, and the zero setting on digital models

How often should a vernier caliper be calibrated?

Twelve months is the standard workshop interval. Calipers used for final inspection or on tight-tolerance work are often placed on 6 months, with a quick gauge-block check between calibrations.

Why vernier and digital calipers drift

Calipers wear at the measuring faces and pick up damage at the jaw tips. A dropped caliper can spring the beam or the slide, and dirt in the rack of a dial caliper introduces jumps. Digital calipers add battery and electronics drift. Most errors show up at the extremes of the range or on small dimensions at the jaw tips, which is where a calibration concentrates its checks.

What your certificate records

  • As-found and as-left readings at each length checked, for external, internal and depth
  • Jaw condition and parallelism observations
  • Gauge blocks and reference standards used, with their traceability
  • Environmental conditions at the time of calibration

References we work to

  • Manufacturer's published accuracy specification for the model and range
  • ISO 9001 clause 7.1.5 — monitoring and measuring resources
  • Your drawing tolerances — the caliper should resolve well inside them

Calibrated in our Caversham lab

Vernier caliper calibration is bench work, so it happens in our lab rather than at your premises. Drop instruments in, bookpickup & drop-off across Perth, or freight them from regional WA. Every certificate is issued under our ISO 9001 certified quality management system and is traceable to national standards.

FAQ

Vernier caliper calibration FAQs

What does a caliper calibration certificate actually show?
The reading of the caliper against gauge blocks of known size at several points across the range, on external, internal and depth functions, both before and after any adjustment — plus a note on jaw condition.
My digital caliper reads zero when closed — does it still need calibration?
Yes. Zero tells you nothing about the reading at 100 mm or about worn jaw tips. Calibration checks the whole range against gauge blocks.
How does calibration differ from a quick check against a gauge block?
A gauge-block check is a verification — useful between calibrations and after a drop. Calibration checks the full range and all functions against traceable references and produces the certificate your quality system needs.
