Height gauges do the marking-out and inspection work on the surface plate, and their accuracy decides whether a part is accepted. How often should a height gauge be calibrated?
Twelve months is standard. Bore gauges used for close-tolerance bore inspection are often kept on 6 months, with a ring-gauge check between calibrations.
Why height gauges drift
Height gauges lose accuracy through base wear, a beam knocked out of square from a knock or a fall, and wear at the scriber tip. None of it is visible on the instrument — a gauge with a worn base still reads a confident number, and the error only shows against a known reference.
