Thermocouple calibration for manufacturing

Ovens, kilns, cookers and curing lines on Perth production floors are controlled by thermocouples and RTDs, and the product record depends on them. Calibrating the sensor with its indicator is what makes the temperature in the batch record defensible.

Thermocouples and RTDs are the sensors behind process control, ovens and test rigs, and their errors are invisible until something is checked against a reference. AmpTech calibrates thermocouple and RTD sensors in our Caversham lab against a reference thermometer traceable to national standards, either as a sensor alone or as a sensor-and-indicator system.

Interval in manufacturing

12 months

ISO 9001; process control records

Setting the interval

Twelve months is standard. Thermocouples that run hot age quickly and are often treated as consumables on a shorter interval; RTDs are more stable but suffer from lead and connection problems.

What the calibration covers

  • Sensor output against a reference thermometer at points between −25 °C and +140 °C
  • System calibration — sensor plus indicator read together, where you send both
  • Indicator accuracy alone, using simulated inputs, where the sensor is fixed in plant
  • Lead and connector condition, which affects thermocouple readings

What your certificate records

The certificate format manufacturing procurement and audit teams ask for: the equipment under test, its serial number, the reference instruments used, as-found and as-left readings, environmental conditions and a traceability statement, plus the thermocouple & rtd-specific items below.

  • As-found and as-left readings at each temperature point
  • Whether calibrated as a sensor alone or as a sensor-and-indicator system
  • Reference thermometer and equipment used, with traceability
  • Environmental conditions at the time of calibration

Standards & frameworks in manufacturing

  • ISO 9001 quality management system
  • ISO 10012 (referenced) — measurement management
  • AS/NZS 3760 for portable electrical equipment on plant
  • Customer-specific PPAP / quality requirements

How manufacturing clients get thermocouples and RTDs to us

Calibration is performed in our Caversham lab — not on site. We collect from and deliver back to manufacturing workshops and offices across Perth, and instruments from regional sites come by freight or via your Perth base.

  • Canning Vale and Bibra Lake manufacturing precincts
  • Welshpool and Kewdale fabrication and assembly workshops
  • Malaga light industrial and trade workshops
  • Osborne Park commercial and QC laboratories

Working with manufacturing procurement

We work with quality and production teams to align calibration intervals with your control plan, supply certificates that map directly to your gauge register, and schedule recall reminders so nothing falls out of cal during a production run.

FAQ

Thermocouple & RTD calibration for manufacturing FAQs

We have sensors fixed inside plant — what can you calibrate?
The indicators and controllers can be calibrated in our lab using simulated inputs, and spare or removable sensors can be calibrated against the reference thermometer. Fixed sensors in situ are outside our lab-based scope.
Should I send the indicator with the thermocouple?
If you use them together, yes — calibrating them as a system checks the whole measurement chain. If the sensor is fixed in plant, we can calibrate the indicator alone using simulated inputs.
What temperature range can you cover?
Our dry-well runs from −25 °C to +140 °C, so sensors used within that band are calibrated against the reference thermometer at points you nominate. Thermocouples that run hotter in service can still have their indicator checked by simulation, which has no such limit — we will explain which parts of the chain the certificate covers.
