Clamp meter calibration for manufacturing

Maintenance teams trend motor currents to catch bearing and load problems early. That only works if the clamp reads the same this year as it did last year, which is what a calibration record demonstrates.

A clamp meter reads current without breaking the circuit, which makes it the default tool for load surveys and motor checks — and makes its accuracy hard to sanity-check in the field. AmpTech calibrates AC and DC clamp meters in our Caversham lab, driving known currents through the jaw from a traceable reference and checking the meter's other functions at the same time.

Interval in manufacturing

12 months

ISO 9001; condition-monitoring programs

Setting the interval

Twelve months is standard. Clamps used for energy audits or for readings that feed into invoicing or reports are often kept on a tighter interval because the current reading is the product.

What the calibration covers

  • AC current at points up to 11 A, the ceiling our calibrator sources directly
  • DC current on Hall-effect clamps, including zero offset after the jaw is opened and closed
  • Voltage and resistance functions where the meter provides them
  • Frequency and inrush functions where fitted
  • Jaw closure and alignment — a jaw that does not close cleanly reads low

What your certificate records

The certificate format manufacturing procurement and audit teams ask for: the equipment under test, its serial number, the reference instruments used, as-found and as-left readings, environmental conditions and a traceability statement, plus the clamp meter-specific items below.

  • As-found and as-left current readings at each test point and range
  • Results for voltage, resistance and any other functions tested
  • Reference current source and other standards used
  • Environmental conditions at the time of calibration

Standards & frameworks in manufacturing

  • ISO 9001 quality management system
  • ISO 10012 (referenced) — measurement management
  • AS/NZS 3760 for portable electrical equipment on plant
  • Customer-specific PPAP / quality requirements

How manufacturing clients get clamp meters to us

Calibration is performed in our Caversham lab — not on site. We collect from and deliver back to manufacturing workshops and offices across Perth, and instruments from regional sites come by freight or via your Perth base.

  • Canning Vale and Bibra Lake manufacturing precincts
  • Welshpool and Kewdale fabrication and assembly workshops
  • Malaga light industrial and trade workshops
  • Osborne Park commercial and QC laboratories

Working with manufacturing procurement

We work with quality and production teams to align calibration intervals with your control plan, supply certificates that map directly to your gauge register, and schedule recall reminders so nothing falls out of cal during a production run.

FAQ

Clamp meter calibration for manufacturing FAQs

We use clamp readings for condition monitoring — does the certificate help?
Yes. The as-found readings tell you whether the clamp has shifted since the last calibration, which is exactly what you need to know before you trust a trend built on its readings.
Do you calibrate the current clamp or just the meter functions?
Both. The current clamp is calibrated by passing known currents through the jaw from a traceable source, and the voltage, resistance and other functions are checked separately.
How much current can you actually apply through the jaw?
Up to 11 A, which is what our calibrator sources directly. That covers the low current ranges most clamps are read on day to day, and your certificate states exactly which points were tested. If you need the 200 A or 600 A ranges verified, tell us when you enquire — we will say so plainly rather than imply a range we did not test.
